Celebrate!

A marriage celebration is happening next weekend, and I am ready. Hooray!

My two wonderful sisters in law are formally getting married after 35+ years together. I'm pleased that they can enjoy all the legal benefits of marriage.

The colors come from the kale fabric from Kaffe Fassett: greens, turquoise, reds, gold. My favorite part of quilting is putting all the fabrics together. I have never made a quilt from just one "line," I would rather mix things up for a scrappy look.

The binding is mostly turquoise with a few red pearl bracelets at one corner.

The backing is mostly a sheet from The Company Store that I purchased a while ago on sale. The large piece makes the backing easy to assemble. And the gulls are so cute! I did a little piecing on it, as I had some alphabet blocks to make the initials of the happy couple. My son told me that the green + has a particular meaning, but that's legal here, so, oh well!

Spiral quilting seems to be my "go to" design. I really should venture away from this predictability, but when the quilt is a gift, I want a guaranteed result.

Sun Break

I'm just home from a break in Palm Springs. I managed to do a little handwork while sitting by the pool in the shade.

The bougainvillea was gorgeous, and looking at this photo brings with it the scent of citrus blossoms.

Now I'm home, it's raining and windy, and this quilt is under the machine going round and round.

Can you see the trees outside my sewing room blowing?

I hope this quilt will be finished for Friday's Finish-it-up.

Something New for Me

Appliqué! I've never done it, but want to try it.

I've prepared some orange peels to sew while on a trip to sunshine. I'll be relaxing in Palm Springs for a week, so I'll take these along.

They may come home in the same condition as now, but who knows?

Stitching in sunshine sounds good. Especially since we have had the wettest 2 months EVER here in the Pacific Northwest!

Happy Progress

This latest quilt is basted. I crawled around on the floor to get it done. My least favorite part of the quilting process. . . .

But these knee pads made it much more comfortable.

I like the colors, with all the shades of white adding a bit of sparkle.

The back uses a sheet with sea gulls from The Company Store that I got on sale a while ago. Sea gulls and initials of the happy couple . . M + ME.

Economy Blocks

A special wedding is coming up; my sisters in laws are making their long term relationship legal! They have been together 35 years, had a ceremony in another state when it was legal there, then had it rejected when outlawed. Our state has said yes to gay marriage by vote, so now they will have another wedding.

Whew! Hard stuff. M and ME have been a big part of my family, so a wedding quilt is in order.

 

 

Here's the start. I'm liking the colors. I seem to do a lot of turquoise, my stash is full of it. I'm adding a dark green, yellow gold and reds. The colors come from a kale print from Kaffe Fassett.

Top is finished, so I'll make a pieced back, then "quilt as desired!"

Library Quilt Display

Last Monday my granddaughter and I set up the display in our local library featuring quilts. I didn't think I had enough for the large cabinet, but I was wrong! I tried to color coordinate the different window areas.

A few large quilts folded, some unfinished blocks, place mats, wall hangings, table runner, quilted apron, pot holder, and a pillow. We added quilting books to connect it to the library. I'm happy that I volunteered to do this.

As I was photographing this morning, I watched and noticed that pretty much no one looked at the display! Oh well, what can you do? You can lead a horse to quilts, but you can't make them see.

Mini Heart Quilt

Here's a little mini based on the log cabin heart block that I spotted on Pintrest.

 

It's 11.5 x 17 inches and will be the included in a bigger project I'm working on. My quilt guild, Quilter's Anonymous, has its annual show March 11, 12, 13, so we have reserved the display areas at the libraries in the county for quilt related displays in February. I have volunteered to mount the display at my local library. I decided that I needed a couple of mini quilts plus some larger ones folded in the cabinet. I'll also include quilting books from the library's collection.

I also may show these blocks that are part of a block of the month quilt that I am working on. It's called "Evergreen State" for the state of Washington. A local quilt shop is sponsoring this BOM, and I go to the store monthly for a class. It's been a practice in precision piecing (especially all those windows on the ferry!).
